The book of love is full
of flowers.
To be in a flower bed
is to be in touch, with nature,
with earth, with life.
A good place to be
laid to rest.
Flowers appear to
bring comfort. They mask
sickness, make us feel better.
Perhaps the
appearance of flowers in a
home, printed on fabrics, is to
put us in flower beds, to
nurture and heal us while
we rest.
Flowers help us to
celebrate, to commemorate, to
remember, to communicate.
Flowers might speak
with words we dare not say.

Safe Keeping
A ceramic peach I’ve been carrying with me for years from New Zealand. I keep it wrapped up in clothes in my suitcase to protect it.
There’s a plastic tablecloth that was purchased in Peckham, and spent some time in the sea in Greece.
Some things I’ve collected and cherished, as well as plums and tulips from the Tesco by my studio.
Some mundane and some with more obvious beauty.
What happens when they come together? Do they take on a new life, speak to each other, playing off the colours and light they’ve been placed amongst?
A tropical looking shell found at the Hospice shop in Tooting, I wonder what ocean it came from.
The glass bowl and cup found in a free box on Telegraph Hill.
Things I keep safe.
Things that have taken on their own power.
Passed on from place to place, held by many hands.
I’ve attempted to immortalize their mystery, to capture them in their new worlds.

Symbolically, the circle represents infinity (each point on the circumference can be both a beginning and an end), perfection, purity and the eternal, as well as the psyche, or the Self. There are also elements of the Mandala and the Yantra, a form of instrument for meditation or contemplation. Other forms of symbolism I will leave to the individual onlooker…
